10. Der Erlkönig

Rick Schaffner

"Der Erlkönig"

Composed by F. Schubert, 1815.
Performed at Indian Wells Theater, Palm Desert, April 2010.

Franz Schubert composed this Lied using the text from a famous poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It tells the fateful story of a child assailed by a supernatural being, the Erlking. In the song the singer depicts four characters — narrator, father, son, and the Erlking. Meanwhile the pianist plays the part of the horse, so I had to get my fingers in shape for fast -- very fast -- galloping.

This performance by Rick Schaffner was featured in a concert presented by California Desert Chorale.
