Inka Dinka Doo! - Musical
Chairs Concert #41
In the spring of 2006 I attended my first
Musical Chairs concert at the Annenberg Theatre in Palm
Springs. It was a tribute to the music of Bock & Harnick,
with musical direction by Wayne Abravanel. I was bowled
over. Soon thereafter I met with Derrik Lewis, producer
and director of the Musical Chairs series for six
seasons. Derrik offered me the position of musical
director for the first show in the seventh season, and
the rest, as they say, is historical (not to mention
hysterical). Inka Dinka Doo! was
designed as a salute to vaudeville & burlesque
(1890-1935). It featured twelve talented performers,
many of whom had been performing professionally for over
forty years. The instrumental trio included super pros
Jeff Stover on bass and Andy Fraga, Jr. on drums. We had
a ball weaving almost 50 songs into classic vaudeville &
burlesque formats, which included barbershop quartets,
song-and-dance acts, sentimental crooners, sight gags,
bad jokes and bawdy strip teases. A great time was had
by one and all. |
