A Night at the Opera
In the winter of 2010 College of the
Desert sponsored a series of performances to benefit the
Michele Gaines Theatre Arts Scholarship Fund. One
program, organized by faculty member Mark Almy, featured
four soloists performing opera arias, which I
accompanied. Following are three selections from that
concert. |

"Mab, la reine des mensonges"

Performed at Pollock Theatre, February 2010. The first line of this aria from
Roméo et Juliette translates as "Mab,
queen of falsehoods, presides over dreams." |

Melissa Batalles
"Après un rêve"
Composed by G. Faure, 1877.
Performed at Pollock Theatre, February 2010.
This song, whose title translates as "After a Dream,"
depicts a dream of romantic elopement with a lover, away
from darkness. However, in the end, the dreamer
longingly says "Return, o mysterious night!" |
