11. A Night at the Opera

In the winter of 2010 College of the Desert sponsored a series of performances to benefit the Michele Gaines Theatre Arts Scholarship Fund. One program, organized by faculty member Mark Almy, featured four soloists performing opera arias, which I accompanied.

Following are three selections from that concert.

Mark Almy

"Mab, la reine des mensonges"

Composed by C. Gounod, 1867.
Performed at Pollock Theatre, February 2010.

The first line of this aria from Roméo et Juliette translates as "Mab, queen of falsehoods, presides over dreams."

Melissa Batalles

"Après un rêve"

Composed by G. Faure, 1877.
Performed at Pollock Theatre, February 2010.

This song, whose title translates as "After a Dream," depicts a dream of romantic elopement with a lover, away from darkness. However, in the end, the dreamer longingly says "Return, o mysterious night!"

Kara Masek

"Glitter and Be Gay"

Composed by L. Bernstein, 1956.
Performed at Pollock Theatre, February 2010.

Leonard Bernstein's musical setting of Candide features this showpiece coloratura aria. which begins with the line "Glitter and be gay, that's the part I play."
