No Way To Treat a Lady
Justin Blake, artistic director of
California Desert Regional Theatre, has been producing
plays in the Palm Springs area for many years. I began
accompanying workshops for him several years ago, and
Justin would periodically say, "Some day I'll stage
another musical and you'll be musical director." That
day actually arrived in 2010, and I eagerly signed on.
No Way To Treat a Lady is a nifty little-known
musical written by Douglas J. Cohen. It's a farcical
murder mystery, no less, with outrageous disguises,
belly-laugh lines and appealing music. A conventional
suspense-filled cat-and-mouse mystery between a
detective and a serial killer is augmented by the
detective's would-be girl friend, the murderer's
has-been mother, and an assortment of other humorous
characters. Two performances were presented at the
Rancho Mirage Public Library, followed by two
performances at the Hi-Desert Cultural Center in Joshua
Tree. Ladies, beware! |
