Relatively ... Singing: An
Evening of Cabaret and Sibling Revelry
In 2007 Elizabeth Dreyfuss invited me
to serve as musical director for a new show she was
developing. Elizabeth and her older sister, Dela Zimmer,
had grown up in a show-biz family in London. Her
grandfather had sung and danced in English music halls
and her mother had sung with the big bands in the Second
World War. Elizabeth performed in many West End London
theatre productions, tours, and television shows,
performing musical theatre, pop and jazz music. Dela went another
route, specializing in classical music, operetta and
opera. Both emigrated to the United States and settled
in the Palm Springs area. Relatively
... Singing focuses on two directions taken by two
sisters -- how they have competed and collaborated
through the years. It features solos and duets
highlighting each singer's interests, along with vintage
recordings and photographs. The show was previewed at
the Indio Performing Arts Center in fall of 2008 and then
was expanded into a full production at the Indian Wells
Theater on the Palm Desert campus of California State
University in the spring of 2009. Liz and Dela were
wonderful to work with and I recall their show with
great fondness. |
