Re: Denis Moreen
To whom it may concern:
I am writing on behalf of Denis Moreen, professor emeritus at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California. I know Denis in several capacities, having been his student, his colleague and even his supervisor at Notre Dame. In all capacities, I can only speak highly of the attributes he brings to his profession.
Denis is a very popular teacher, and continues to be in demand. Students sign up for his class even when the topic is out of their particular focus, because of experience they know they will get from the class. Denis is a dedicated pedagogue, who brings fresh teaching strategies to the classroom. His methods often surprise his students, but the results are consistent: the highest level of achievement and learning. This was true in my case as well, when I was his student at then College of Notre Dame. I now find the lessons learned in his Graduate Music Seminar course can be applied to many aspects of my life. Denis is also a wonderful colleague. He is helpful and supportive in every way. At department meetings, he brings ideas to the table, and also listens to others and makes very reflective and insightful comments. He has helped shape the entire curriculum of the music department, and also of the entire university. He was integral to the drafting of our B.F.A. in Musical Theatre degree, which has become one of the most successful programs on campus. His work was well respected by all his colleagues in other departments and fields. As an example, Denis was particularly helpful to the university when he recognized, early on, that computers would play an important role in the future of education. Before most schools even owned a computer, Denis led the campaign for our first computer lab.
Denis continues to be an inspiration to me. His retirement left a deep void, yet he has maintained his campus presence, working as piano accompanist and teaching various classes as the department needs. He has my greatest respect. I strongly encourage you to consider Denis for any capacity needed by your institution. I am happy to answer specific questions, and can be reached at the number or address below.
Sincerely,
Michael Schmitz, D.M.A. Chair, Department of Music Notre Dame de Namur University 1500 Ralston Avenue Belmont, CA 94002 (650) 508-3597
